My name is Karis Annette McCaskill, and I'm originally from Los Angeles, California. I studied Studio Art at Grinnell College in Iowa. I also spent four months studying abroad in Seoul, Korea. After graduating in 2024, I returned to Korea to teach English in Jeonju for six months. From there I moved to Utica, New York, where I worked in a ceramics studio and built my portfolio. This fall, I'll be attending the Portfolio Development program at Kansas State University.
My art reflects my life and allows me to work through the moments and emotions I want to remember. My art is process-based and I work mostly with sculpture to talk about my self image and feelings such as longing and unabashedness. I also utilize video and audio when my work is meant to develop over time or transform. I am aware that I will continue to have impactful and precious experiences, and my goal with my art is to preserve the memories and feelings that come with these experiences and may be forgotten. I am intrigued by the conversation between the temporary nature of experience and memories and my need to document my thoughts and feelings, which happens within the context of ceramics taking up space and making my work permanent.
It’s hard to pin down my influences and inspiration, but I think the teen fantasy and drama books and television I consumed contained themes of care-freeness and self-exploration that defined my adolescence and drives my motivation today. I’m drawn to the process-oriented nature of Brie Ruais’ work and her understanding of the clay’s natural movement and resistance. I’m inspired by Jackson Shaner’s ability to combine sculptural and functional ware and convey palpable horror. I’m fascinated by replicating things about me that are hard to articulate. It’s a challenge to represent myself accurately and it’s an ongoing project as I am constantly changing.
